Claudia Bauzer Medeiros: It’s all about the logs — the FAIR, the bad and the ugly

Logs and the events they embed have been produced by people or devices throughout the centuries, helping us understand the underlying processes. Alexander the Great, Columbus and Lavoisier are historical examples of log producers. Their logs – just like modern business logs – were under confidentiality constraints, heterogeneous, fragmented, of varied quality, and covering multiple kinds of events and time frames, making them hard to reproduce, reuse and learn from.

Reusability is one of the pillars of science, as reflected by the FAIR open science paradigm of data quality criteria – namely, data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. Open science and process mining deal with seemingly non-comparable universes. The first covers the entire world, involves scientific experiments and requires us to openly share and exchange data and code to accelerate knowledge discovery and scientific collaboration. Process mining, on the other hand, is usually restricted to one company or conglomerate, is applied to business/industrial environments, and is conducted under constraints of confidentiality and data privacy, Nevertheless, each enterprise is a big world of its own, and lessons on openness and “FAIR-ification” can be extended and adapted to business logs. Moreover, FAIR is good, but not enough.

The talk will present some of the challenges of log “FAIR-ification” and beyond — and the consequent benefits this brings to the FAIRification of the processes in an organization. It will also discuss how to conciliate the need for confidentiality in process mining with the directives of openness and sharing without frontiers of open science.

Biography

Claudia Bauzer Medeiros is a full professor at the Institute of Computing, University of Campinas, UNICAMP. She conducts research in open science infrastructures and in scientific data management, particularly with challenges associated with data heterogeneity, volume and complexity, for various types of real-world applications involving large networks of scientists and institutions. In her role as Member of the Coordination of the eScience and Data Science program at FAPESP, a major Brazilian funder, she led actions associated with open data/open science policies, including the coordination of the construction of the Sao Paulo state network of open research data repositories, involving over 100,000 researchers and students. She received several Brazilian and international awards for teaching, research, and initiatives to attract women to computing. She was awarded the Latin American Merit Award in Informatics 2018 granted by the Latin American Center for Informatics Studies (CLEI). She is a member of the board of WDS (World Data System, an official data management organism of the International Science Council). Commander of the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit, member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). She holds two Dr Honoris Causa – from University Antenor Orrego, Peru, and University Paris-Dauphine PSL, France.

Biography

With over two decades dedicated to process improvement and transformation, including approximately 14 years deeply immersed in process mining, Rudy Kuhn has consistently helped organizations maximize the potential of their end-to-end processes. His career spans significant milestones, from building IBM’s initial e-business consulting team in Germany and co-founding Avinci AG, to establishing ProcessGold—the world’s first company exclusively focused on process mining—which was later acquired by UiPath.

As Lead Transformation Evangelist at Celonis, Rudy is tasked with inspiring customers, partners, and analysts to reimagine their operations through the lens of Process Intelligence, Automation, and Orchestration. He advises and coaches leaders, guiding them to accelerate their path to value by uncovering opportunities hidden within processes and driving sustainable business transformation.
